Nairobi - the cosmopolitan city in east Africa

The capital of Kenya has much to offer visitors as well as beautiful national parks and wildlife, Nairobi is cosmopolitan and serves as the fast-beating heart of east Africa. You will find interesting museums, galleries and evening entertainment, restaurants and bars where you can enjoy local dishes, finest quality coffees as well as tours to nearby townships to complete your experience of the great African city.

Nairobi: In and Out of Africa

One of the top tourist attractions in Nairobi is the Karen Blixen Museum, home of the author of the novel, “Out of Africa”. The film based on the novel was mostly shot on the grounds of this beautiful colonial home, which opens its doors to visitors for an intimate glimpse at the life of the woman behind the famous memoirs.

In Nairobi, you will experience a true sense of being “in Africa”, especially during a visit to the Rift Valley. About an hour's drive from the city, you will find the region's beautiful, poignant, vast plains, savannah and steeps.

However, you do not have to go very far from Nairobi to experience the unspoiled beauty and wildlife, the Nairobi National Park is a major attraction and for good reason. Lying just a few kilometres outside the city, a nature park with zebras, giraffes and lions among many other savannah animals and in a natural free, unspoiled setting; an enthralling sight for children and adults, in short, a great family day out. Visitors can also book an “en-suite tent at the Nairobi Tented Camp and spend a night in the park, an eco-camp with a touch of luxury in the wild. Guided Safari walks and Game Drives are available also for making the most of this informative and memorable excursion.

While you are at the Nairobi National Park, you may wish to visit Dame Sheldrick's Elephant and Rhino Orphanage, located on the park's grounds. Indeed, elephants are the only species you will not see out in the plains; the shelter cares for young elephants and rhinos, which is a means of supporting conservation efforts of these species.

For animal lovers, the Giraffe Centre is another top destination in Nairobi where you can view the Rothschild Giraffe thriving under the care and supervision of breeders, who have successfully helped many giraffes return to the wild. This breeding centre is dedicated to the well-being of the species and serves as an education centre for local schoolchildren.

To learn more about local crafts, the Kazuri Bead Factory and Pottery Centre, is worth a visit. A tour of the factory which employs mostly women, will reveal how beautiful beads, pottery and leather goods are made and has a shop where you can buy souvenirs. For more shopping, Nairobi has plenty of boutiques and shopping centres spread across the city as well as the Massai Market, held at different locations according to the day of the week, not to be missed if you are interested in buying traditional crafts.
